A New Intersection for Sonic exploration: A Musical theater event

I’m writing and producing  an exciting new project – “From Cristi to Bosco,” a satirical musical theater event. I have started writing it, but my vision for a theater event is so big that I have decided to start a fundraiser to realize a much bigger production than I could finance myself!! All the contributions will be tax deductible and partially benefit my fiscal sponsor The Center for New Music, a nonprofit 501(c). A donation toward this musical theater project, will also benefit The Center for New Music. It’s a win for everyone because it’s considered a tax deductible donation.
 
This musical is like no other - crossing many boundaries – drawing on experimental sonic exploration and creative jazz. It’s a satire too, set in a workplace I am well acquainted with: the recording studio. The protagonist is a working class composer, who, records with voice over artists by day, and by night is creating sonic explorations, which will become known as “The Bosco Series” project. You might say that this story will explore the purpose and frustration of the journey as dreams and nightmares unfold.
 
Now that IS different, I’m sure you are saying to yourself!
 
So, what IS sonic exploration and creative jazz? I’ve been developing this new sound for the past three years. It’s electronica paired with percussion arts and synth interplay and the many elegant lines and improvisations of piano, trumpet, saxophone, guitar and bass.
 
I must credit my many partners who have joined my electronica and percussion-led madness with their acoustic improvisations. My frequent band member in boldness is Clifford Brown III, aka CBIII, who leads with jazz call and response flutter patterns, and simple dissonant melodies. New in the mix with CBIII and I is Matt Montgomery, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter, and video game developer, who is playing electric guitar and violin. A regular player undaunted with mind changing boundaries is Russell Golub, a rock guitarist who bends notes that soar high and low.
 
This musical will be both funny and irreverent with inspirations drawn from the Broadway hits Rent and Hamilton, to the countless experimental music and theatric performances produced by SFJAZZ, SFEMF, Stanford, Soundbox and others that I’ve experienced living here in the Bay Area.  All in all, this project is a telling of life and dreams as a working class composer!
 
For the past 30 years, I’ve built several businesses, mostly in recording studios. In Los Angeles, I worked alongside independent film producers and directors, who had big visions but not a lot of money. I’ve worked with rockers, rap artists and jazz musicians, all who have big personalities and lots of personal style. And, in San Francisco, I worked with big tech companies, like video game companies, which had very demanding deadlines and they wanted many voice over artists to choose from and to represent their brands in countries across the world.
 
I’m setting this musical – “From Cristi to Bosco,” in the recording studio, because it’s the intersection between corporate interests and creativity. It’s a satire of a composer, who, by night is writing his experimental music “The Bosco Series” project, and, by day, a satiric view of the studio life of recording the voice of Cristi, a  voice-activated personal digital assistant. From the casting calls of American English, French, German, Aussie, Japanese and Chinese speakers to the ironies of impeccable customer service, the comedy of human interaction from a global but localized view, with ridiculously short deadlines and torturous guidelines made on a minute’s notice. It’s all from the eyes of a composer who will sonically blend his love for his big dog BOSCO in a comical manner, while interplaying his commitment to his work and art in his premiere musical.   
 
$10,000 will fund:

• Finishing composing the musical
• The stage venue and production tools
• Paying the music ensemble and production team
• Three to five actors
• Advertising and promotion
• CD replication and printing

 
I’m 62 years old! I may have stepped away from the corporate world of voice over TV, video games, and Internet audio, but my heart remains in the studio sound designing and composing by crossing boundaries and genres in the percussive arts, and now, a return to musical theater, recalling my summer-long stints in New Hampshire.
